How much is a car engine worth?

Your specific answer to this inquiry will depend on three major factors:

  • the complexity and size of the engine that you have chosen.
  • The rate of the facility Ray, you have chosen to get the engine replaced
  • whether you are getting the engine replaced with a refurbished, used, or a new engine.

If you opt for a new engine, the four-cylinder ones will start at around $4000. If you go for the V6, you will have to pay $5000 and $7000 in the case of a V8. The prices further increase from these levels depending on the complexity of the engine and the brand of the car. If you decide to go for a performance engine in the case of an imported luxury car, you will need to pay more compared to if you go for a stock engine for a domestic economic car.

If you go for used car engines, you may get it for as little as $400-$700. The mileage on the vehicle, the age, and transportation expenses from where the engine is located are the primary factors impacting the prices of such engines. The freight costs are not included in the purchase, but they must be factored in because the retailer will send them to you.

The primary danger in the case of buying a used engine is the labor cost. Even though you purchase the engine from a junkyard or other seller, you may receive a limited guarantee on the engine. Furthermore, the facility will not cover the labor charges. If the engine fails within two days of installation, you will be responsible for the mechanics time and the additional billable hours needed to get it functioning again.

However, if you choose to go for a refurbished engine, you will reduce your engine failure risk. When engines undergo rebuilding, the manufacturer’s operational tolerances are restored. This does not mean that the engine becomes brand-new. However, bad parts are removed along with replacing all the gaskets and seals. Therefore, you can rest assured that the engine will work and function correctly once it has been installed. This also increases the engine’s lifespan.

However, this assurance comes with a price. A rebuilding engine cylinder will cost you at least $2500. On the other hand, if you go for a used four-cylinder engine, you will only have to pay $1000 or even less than that.

Labor costs

for a normal engine, the shops quote a time of 12 hours. If you go for a simple engine, you may get a quote of as low as eight hours. However, if the work is large, it can take up to 15 hours. You need to multiply the number of hours with the rate of the shop to find out the final cost. The cost of the shop maybe $90 per hour to $150. Therefore, if you go for a low-end shop that takes hundred dollars, the cost of the engine replacement may be $1100-$1800.
